BMT Expands Offering with Marine Simulation Capability

27-Jun-2007

BMT Group Ltd, announced today that it has signed an agreement to use SimPlus simulation technology in the US and European markets. The deal will furnish BMT with a unique simulation capability that can forecast, assess and adjust scheduled plans for optimal performance within a container port environment.

BMT is a leading provider of consulting services to the ports and logistics industry covering a range of areas including design, infrastructure, operations and asset management.

David Wignall, BMT's Head of Ports and Logistics, said: "This agreement represents a significant milestone for BMT as it extends our services and solutions capabilities deeper into the business of port operations. It also complements our portfolio of proprietary technology applications, strengthening our position as the biggest provider of through-lifecycle transport asset services."

SimPlus Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based technology solutions company, specialises in operations intelligence and software solutions for marine port operations. Directors of SimPlus Stuti Nautiyal, Chen Chuanyu and Ye Rong said: "We feel that partnering with BMT is a positive step - BMT has not only demonstrated a clear technical leadership position in the field, but also brings to the partnership a global distribution network that will allow a Singapore business to expand its market reach."

The unique flagship product of SimPlus' - SET4Port - is particularly relevant in today's global market where container ports are under increasing pressure to manage the growth in demand for container handling. The SimPlus application completes a suite of BMT proprietary applications which include Freight Forecasting, Port Security and Asset Tracking, Satellite Tracking and Surveillance and a revolutionary on-line Digital Tidal Atlas.

This latest announcement comes just months after the acquisition of another technology player, BrightFire Engineering Systems, and is in line with the BMT Ports and Logistics division's migration from being a consulting organisation dealing in professional knowledge and experience, to a developer of IP-based technology solutions.

Bringing together eight subsidiaries of the BMT group, the Ports and Logistics division supports planning, developing and operating through-lifecycle transport assets for multi-modal transportation networks such as ports, shipping terminals and railways. It is estimated this market will require over USD 250 billion a year in Asia Pacific alone, to support the anticipated growth in both imports and exports.

"BMT, through our Ports and Logistics division, is the biggest player in this market sector to offer a full range of through-lifecycle transport asset services, supporting clients from conceptualisation and design to asset optimisation and even disposal," said David Wignall. "Through innovative technology-based services, we are able to offer our customers modelling and simulation capabilities that enable them to streamline their operations, thereby saving them time and money", he added.

Under the agreement with SimPlus Private Limited, BMT will sell and support the company's applications in the American and European markets for the next five years. Discussions have already taken place with a number of customers who are actively looking for ways to streamline their container operations as shifting global trade patterns are placing extreme pressure on what is frequently aging transportation infrastructure. Existing SimPlus customers include the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Jurong Port Private Limited, Surbana International Consultants Private Limited and PSA International.

Already positioned as the largest player in maritime and transportation consulting, BMT has identified Singapore as the global headquarters for its Ports and Logistics division from which to develop the significant growth opportunities in the Asia Pacific region. This latest announcement comes at a time when the company is making substantial investments in high-level appointments to provide clients with an extended service offering in the design, development and operation of transportation infrastructure.
