Being a good corporate citizen is fundamental to BMT's ethos and we are striving to become a more sustainable business.
BMT is an employee benefit trust. That means that our staff really do care about how the company is run. So it is for ourselves that we seek to comply with the highest standards of ethics, quality management and governance, but also to give our customers that extra peace of mind. As a company that takes this very seriously we have developed management systems accredited to international standards. In fact our unique Sustainability Management System (SuMS) is accredited to and exceeds the standards of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. But the accreditation is not the point. The idea of responsible business management is enshrined in our corporate values and made real in the way in which we run the business every day. The purpose of the management systems is to enable and support these values, creating a company on which our staff, customers and partners know they can always rely.
Project
BMT’s unique Sustainability Management System (SuMS) meets the requirements of ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 18001. The system is the first truly combined, and therefore single response, to the requirements of these internationally recognised standards for quality and the environment. Through a structured programme of staff consultation, development, review and discussion, we now have a fully functioning accredited system that has rapidly become part of normal business.
We have looked carefully at the impact our activities have on the environment. As a mostly office based business with locations around the world, our two areas of focus for environmental management have been energy use in our buildings and emissions associated with travel. There are of course other areas too but we wanted to start with the things that made the biggest impact. So we began measuring performance and taking practical actions that made a difference. Moving offices to green electricity supplies, sourcing energy saving equipment and introducing new travel policies are just some of the things we have done to reduce our carbon emissions from buildings and travel by 20% over 2 years.

BMT WBM in Brisbane has recently moved into offices where they have used energy efficient lighting and air conditioning, provided secure bicycle storage and shower facilities and lockers to encourage staff to cycle to work and installed advanced video conferencing facilities to minimise the need for staff to travel for meetings.
We have always worked with our customers to create innovative designs and exciting solutions. It's what BMT is all about. Our engineers, scientists and consultants are working every day to help our customers prepare for some of the biggest challenges the world has seen. There are many great examples. Bringing an enviable maritime heritage to bear on today's issues we have developed an enormously effective tool for fleet managers to monitor and reduce the fuel consumption of their ships. A double win: positive impacts on the environment and their profitability. We all know sea levels are rising, but understanding the impacts of climate change in coastal areas and deciding how to use that information is no mean feat. We have been working with government agencies to turn flood risks into meaningful planning and business decision making, helping our customers to make the right decisions in an uncertain future. Whether it is climate change, resource scarcity, energy security, water management or social and economic changes we can help you develop innovative approaches and leading edge technical solutions to help you to continue to succeed in a world of change.

BMT SMARTSERVICES offers a suite of services designed to reduce fuel costs and improve energy efficiency in operations. The services are founded in a unique system that integrates comprehensive vessel recorded data with fully validated metocean (meteorological and oceanographic) data, including wind, wave and current values. The system monitors vessel performance automatically and visualises trends using intuitive on-board and onshore applications. For further information, visit the BMT SMART website.
Like many companies we recognise that business thrives when society thrives. As a global group of companies we see a society which is as broad, diverse and far reaching as our business. Many BMT companies provide valuable support to local community organisations. Our staff can often be found pushing themselves hard to run that extra kilometre or cycle over one more hill, raising money for good causes. All of which we know helps charities and community organisations around the world to do important work. But we wanted to get hands on, to use our technical talents to make a real and discernible impact. So we partnered with a charity, the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme India (AKRSPI) to create a new model for bringing sewerage and sanitation to a remote Indian village. BMT's technical know-how and AKRSPI's community outreach coming together to improve the daily lives of 2,500 people and craft a replicable model of development for rural villages.

Khintla is a small village in the Indian province of Gujarat. Through BMT Giveback, an initiative established to use the skills, knowledge and ideas of BMT staff to help others, we are working with the village community to improve sanitation. The new sewerage system will help prevent water borne diseases such as dysentery and typhoid, which kill huge numbers of children in the country every year. For further information, visit the BMT Giveback website.
Volunteering is an area where the interests of business and society are nicely aligned: A cost effective mechanism for developing our staff which also strengthens the communities of which we are a part and on which we depend. Volunteering as a team brings the added benefits of really getting to know each other and seeing a significant impact at the end of the day.

At the annual BMT Cadence volunteering day, the team took on the challenge of helping the Sea Cadets transform their large drill hall into a community venue suitable for use by a wide range of different community groups. This was a large undertaking as the current hall had not been decorated for 15 years. The end product, however, was a very smart centre which the Sea Cadets were very impressed with, a wonderful and satisfying achievement for all involved.
