BMT offer a wide range of services to ship operators and ports, including the systematic identification, assessment and management of risks across industry sectors

BMT has a long history of helping its customers with marine safety and compliance. As far back as 1987, BMT was involved in the investigations into the capsizing of the Herald of Free Enterprise.
Through model testing, computer simulation and a full scale trial aboard the sister ship, Pride of Free Enterprise, BMT provided evidence to the formal Court of Inquiry into the disaster. These findings helped shape the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO's) Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations.
This was the first of many high profile post-disaster investigations in which BMT was to take a lead role in employing advanced simulation tools.
Today, BMT is continuing to support customers in identifying, assessing and managing risks within their business.
Risk Assessment
BMT provides comprehensive risk assessments of all aspects of vessel operation. We have developed software tools to support operational management of safety and environmental issues and can also provide through-life-cycle safety and environmental management and risk assessment.
Security Management on board Merchant Vessels
The safe deployment at sea of counter-piracy capability requires the application of effective Safety Management Systems, along with assessment of safety procedures for the carriage of armed guards and their compliance with international port entry requirements. BMT can support its customers by providing assurance that anti piracy measures are both effective and safe.
Reducing the risk of groundings and collisions
BMT is able to perform formal safety assessments of vessel traffic and traffic management systems. We review all factors that may influence safety and propose practical safety improvements.
Speed Management
BMT is able to provide a rational evidence-based assessment of the merits of vessel speed restrictions. We have also developed tools to automatically monitor compliance and to provide alerts for individual violations that can benefit operators, owners and regulating authorities.
These services are provided by our specialist operating company in Hong Kong and the UK.
