BMT's MTIA expertise can assist ship operators, ports and infrastructure developers in the identification, assessment and management of marine risks.
Our capabilities are supported with advanced simulation tools which demonstrate clear solutions for developing marine facilities effectively.
BMT’s navigation reviews and marine traffic imapact assessments (MTIA) help identify the primary constraints and the necessary safety measures for the construction of new marine infrastructure developments, including bridges, terminals and jetties.
MTIA assessments have vitally supported the design, development and construction of project, providing sound safety measures early on. Our extensive footprint in this area extends to our involvement in every major civil engineering project touching the water in Hong Kong over the last decade.
Additionally, our feasibility studies are backed with extensive background research and analysis on identification, minimisation and mitigation of the environmental impact of the project.
Examples of the types of projects supported by BMT's MTIAs include:
- Export of construction waste
- Building an airport
- Building MTR metro tunnels
- Building road bridges and tunnels
- Installing a footbridge
- Tourism enhancement
Tools and Simulations
BMT's MTIA work is supported by the DYnamic MarIne TRaffIc simulation model (DYMITRI), developed specifically to meet the challenge posed by the assessment of collision risk of dense marine traffic streams. It uses autonomous agents to mimic navigation behaviour of mariners and allows vessels to manoeuvre in a realistic manner.
The model allows vessel encounters and conflicts to be calculated for a variety of traffic situations and mixtures of vessel speed and density. It can therefore be used for comparing a range of different traffic situations and risk control proposals. Statistical measures of conflicts, collisions, and delays may also be produced.
A thorough evaluation of traffic conflicts is available to the customer to form the foundation for the assessment of risk within a Formal Safety Assessment framework.
We provide Marine Safety and MTIA services in the following markets: Ports and Terminals, Urban Environment and Rail, Offshore Renewable Energy.
