The Requirement
BMT performed an Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) on behalf of ENI Krueng Mane Ltd. EIA is a mandatory assessment and it is required in the process of permit application for any project planning.
The Ministry of The Environment has the authorisation for EIA approval. EIA will predict the impacts from the planned business and activities. As a result from the impact prediction, EIA will give a guideline to managing and monitoring the impact on environment.
This EIA consists of technical, economic and environmental impact that may or may not happen towards the upcoming project that is intended by the customers.
BMT had to face the fishermen community that owns a high resistance towards oil and gas activity that may potentially disturb their territory as well as environment. On the other hand, the location of this activity is at the Strait of Malacca, which is located on the border between Indonesia and Malaysia therefore BMT was very prepared towards the potentially high conflict that may occur. In addition to that, BMT has to face Indonesian institutions with high and complex bureaucracy.
Our Approach
The EIA was compiled by using three types of approaches, the technological approach covers the issue of drilled mud distribution, a recommendation of how to manage it, modeling towards the distribution of drilled mud as well as a prediction of the location towards the spreading of mud.
Institutional approach includes communicating to the security institution from the project that will be executed by ENI Krueng Mane.
The socio-cultural approach is an approach towards the community either mass or individual approach. This is done in order to make the community accept and be open towards the planned activity that will be executed.
On the other hand, to avoid the conflict that may occur, BMT went to the sea along with Sea Commanders that will guard them.
Outcome and Benefits
As this was an offshore project, BMT worked in partnership with ENI to perform the activities on one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
As a result of the partnership BMT was awarded further projects with ENI. Not only that, this activity has given BMT an unforgettable experience in compiling an EIA.
