Sok Koon Chew, Risk & Safety Engineer, Oil & Gas
“My ideas and contributions are valued”
I joined the BMT Singapore office in 2013 as a senior consultant and also project manager for risk and safety projects in the oil and gas sector. Typically I am involved in delivering a number of safety studies for clients, including Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), Hazard Identification and Fire & Explosion Impacts Assessments for both onshore and offshore facilities.
What I enjoy most about my role is the satisfaction of successfully assisting clients in overcoming their development or operational challenges. I recall one example when, after completing a demanding job, the client commended the valuable information BMT had provided on Singapore’s QRA guidelines. The team’s collective efforts paid off and we were able to share this achievement.
I attribute this achievement and others to a constructive work environment. In our offices we engage in meaningful two-way communication with management. Employees at every level have the freedom to express their ideas and views, and this openness to give and receive feedback has been vital to developing trusting work relationships. We are all valued for our skills, knowledge and contributions to the team. Management advocates new ideas and are not adverse to different ways of doing things – this has been a vital reason for choosing BMT as an employer.
A number of my colleagues would agree that abundant opportunities exist at BMT. Recently I had the chance to take on technical leadership responsibilities during an internal transition period. I also frequently engage with our colleagues in the Jakarta office, during which I gain knowledge on Indonesia’s oil and gas market.
People often ask about the challenges of working in a male dominant industry. I am pleased to say I have not encountered any gender inequality in the oil and gas industry in general, and at BMT, everyone is treated equally. Granted we work hard and produce results, each of us has the same opportunity to shine.
