BMT is involved in the development of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, addressing a number of marine traffic issues during the construction of the bridge and leveraging our expertise in MTIA and other maritime-related engineering services.

The Requirement

BMT is involved in the development of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, an important and large-scale project which will connect three major cities on the Pearl River Delta and further improve cross-border connections. Proposed to be 50km in length, the bridge will become one the area’s defining landmarks.

The Hong Kong section comprises 120 hectares of artificial island and 9km of land and marine viaduct. The scope of work under BMT addresses a number of marine traffic issues during the construction of the bridge, leveraging our expertise in:

  • Maritime-related engineering,
  • Ship navigation
  • Marine traffic impact assessment (MTIA)
  • Risk management
  • BMT’s environment experts are also providing counsel on the bridge development’s environmental implications

Our Approach

BMT is working very closely with our clients to provide dedicated marine safety and regulatory expertise to the construction of the Hong Kong Boundary Facilities and the Hong Kong Link Road, which encompasses part of the bridge structure and the associated reclamation area.

Providing ongoing support to the Contractor throughout the construction phase, BMT’s role is to assist clients in developing specific and well-planned marine schedules and recommend optimal marine works solutions with the preparation of Marine Traffic Arrangement Plans.

Outcome and Benefits

BMT’s involvement in the construction of the Hong Kong- Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is facilitating the smooth proceedings of associated marine works.

Following the provision of marine technical support for the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macau bridge, BMT has subsequently been invited by the Contractor to support the development of infrastructure works at the western portion of the Boundary Crossing Facilities, which involves construction of roads and viaduct connects to the Airport island.

The Contractor proposed to construct the viaduct structure in precast concrete segments and will build the unit at an offsite factory. Our role is to conduct a Temporary Marine Traffic Management Plan (TMTM) that addresses the key issues associated with delivery and shipping related aspects of the construction’s planning and operation.
