Summary
For a proposed shipping terminal in Madagascar with export projections of 407,000 tonnes of mineral sands per annum, BMT provided full concept planning and management of site investigations and engineering design studies.
BMT's role included Rockworks, Jetty, Wharf Structures Design and Costs to DFS level, as well as preparation of tender documentation.
Services and Expertise provided:
- Port Engineering
- Coastal Structures
- Navigation Simulation
- Project Management
Description
The marine works for construction include a piled access jetty and offshore loading facility for small to medium bulk carriers, mooring and breasting dolphins, and an elevated onshore pad and causeway structures. BMT established optimised criteria for design and operations in a Basis of Design (BoD) document.
BMT completed the design of the onshore laydown pad and intertidal causeway including for armour and filter layer levels and materials, wave and scour protection, structural interfaces and slope stability. BMT completed the design of the marine structures including the piled trestle, loading platform, dolphins, catwalks, fenders and bollards to accommodate the design vessels and integrate with the materials handling systems. This was followed by completion of a berthing analysis and a static mooring analysis using Optimoor software.
We undertook navigation simulation modelling using Rembrandt, BMT's proprietary, DNV- accredited software. The simulation confirmed:
- The performance of design ships navigating and manoeuvring in the channel
- Towage requirements for berthing and de-berthing with berth approach velocities
- Optimal fender spacing
- Impacts of the project on a nearby container port
- Operable limits affecting berth access and availability.
BMT developed technical specifications and drawings for Basic Engineering design, prepared internal cost estimates and managed a Request for Cost Estimate process to a number of marine contractors to optimise the project capital cost accuracy.
