The Requirement

BMT assisted Exxon Mobil E&P Indonesia to undertake the environmental management and environmental monitoring program (UKL-UPL), which is the guideline for managing and monitoring the environmental impacts from planned business and activities in a relatively small scale.

An environmental management and environmental monitoring programme was needed by Exxon Mobil E&P Indonesia as it is compulsory to have this document if they want to begin an oil and gas exploration.

The unique aspect of the project was that it was conducted in proximity of marine national park of Cendrawasih Bay, a bay that owns the national and worldwide attention. This national park has an environmental sensitive area with an abundance of protected species and pristine coastline.

One of the key challenges was that the site was at a remote area, lacking in infrastructure, thus mobilization was a challenge. In addition to that, BMT faced the ethnic group of Papua, an ethnic group that is known for its uniqueness. Approaching Papua’s ethnic group is seen as a great challenge as they are very concerned and strict about their communal land rights.

Our Approach

The Environmental Management and Environmental Monitoring (UKL-UPL) is completed by BMT through collecting some data that will cover the three components of UKL-UPL, which are, physical chemistry component, biological component as well as socioeconomic culture and health component.

For physical chemistry and biological component, BMT took samples from the location of activity. These samples were then brought to the lab where it was analysed and was mixed with some other substances. Not only that, the results were compared with the existing parameter. After all the tests on the samples were done, a lab test result certificate will be received.

On the other hand, the socioeconomics culture and health component was completed by BMT through having a structured interview, casual interview as well as focusing group discussion with the community.

Outcomes and Benefits

The project was done by BMT according to what they have targeted. By creating this environmental management and environmental monitoring program (UKL-UPL), BMT has helped Exxon Mobil E&P Indonesia to coordinate with Bali’s marine national park of Cendrawasih Bay to execute an oil and gas activity.
